Celebrate Black History Month with us at the Abraham Staats House Tory Jack Day
“Samuel Burris Speaks: Conductor on the Underground Railroad” Saturday, February 14th, 2009 11:00 am ~ 4:00 pm (page down for photos from the previous events)
As part of its annual “Tory Jack Day” program celebrating Black History Month, the South Bound Brook Historic Preservation Advisory Commission, in conjunction with The Friends of the Abraham Staats House, Inc., and in partnership with the Women’s Guild of South Bound Brook, will present eminent historian Joe Becton.
He will speak on the topic “Samuel Burris Speaks: Conductor on the Underground Railroad” at 11:00 am on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 at the historic Abraham Staats House. Mr. Becton, a National Park Service Interpretive Park Ranger, has been recognized with the Community Service award for setting a standard of excellence in interpretation and for his role in connecting Americans to our national parks through wonderful stories and varied media.
Members of the 3rd Regiment United States Colored Troops Civil War re-enactors will also participate as part of the presentation, and be on hand to answer questions and interact with the public.
Following Mr. Becton’s presentation, the public is invited to tour the historic Abraham Staats House and view an exhibit on slavery and the contributions of blacks to our national heritage, presented by local historian and Women’s Guild member, Mrs. Joyce Smith. Tours will end at 4 pm. Suggested donation for Mr. Becton’s presentation is $3 per adult.

As part of its annual “Tory Jack Day” program celebrating Black History Month, the South Bound Brook Historic Preservation Advisory Commission, in conjunction with The Friends of the Abraham Staats House, Inc., and in partnership with the Women’s Guild of South Bound Brook, presented eminent historian Joe Becton.
He spoke on the topic “African Soldiers in the American Revolution” at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007 at the historic Abraham Staats House. Mr. Becton, National Park Service Supervisory Park Ranger, has been recognized with the Community Service award for setting a standard of excellence in interpretation and for his role in connecting Americans to our national parks through wonderful stories and varied media. Suggested donation for Mr. Becton’s presentation is $3 per adult (over age 12).
Members of the First Rhode Island Regiment acted as Honor Guard, providing a musket firing demonstration and was on hand to answer questions and interact with the public. This living history reenactment unit portrays members of the First Rhode Island, an American Revolutionary War military unit comprised largely of free and enslaved African Americans, which served from 1778 to 1783. The unit was commended for its valor during the war.
Following Mr. Becton’s presentation, the public was invited to tour the historic Abraham Staats House and view an exhibit on slavery and the contributions of blacks to our national heritage, presented by local historian and Women’s Guild member, Mrs. Joyce Smith. Tours will end at 4 p.m.

Featuring Mr. Joe Becton and the First Rhode Island Regiment Revolutionary War Living HistoriansAs part of its annual “Tory Jack Day” program celebrating Black History Month, the South Bound Brook Historic Preservation Advisory Commission, in conjunction with the Friends of the Abraham Staats House, Inc., and in partnership with the First Baptist Church, presented eminent historian Joe Becton. He spoke on the topic “History Through Jazz” at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at the First Baptist Church, Franklin Street, South Bound Brook, NJ 08880. Supervisory Park Ranger Joe Becton is recognized with the Community Service award setting a standard of excellence in interpretation. Connecting Americans to our national parks through wonderful stories and varied media is one of the most important missions of the National Park Service. Members of the First Rhode Island Regiment acted as Honor Guard providing a musket firing demonstration and will be on hand to answer questions and interact with the public. From 2-4pm the public was invited to tour the historic Abraham Staats House and view an exhibit by Mrs. Joyce Smith. It is entitled “The History of Jazz in Black and White” and complements the presentation of Mr. Becton.
